What is spiritual maturity?

  • Knowing Christ – Having a relationship with him

  • Knowing who you are in Christ – Who does the bible say you are according to what Jesus has done?

  • Believing who you are in Christ – Being fully persuaded in your heart that you are who God said you are the through Jesus

  • Being who you are in Christ – Acting out and living what you now know to be truth.

Why do you think that people do not strive to be spiritually mature? What holds us back?

1. We don’t want to give up the current life we are living.

Someone once told me “I want to give my life to God but I don’t want to stop drinking and partying yet.

Mathew 16:25

For whoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake will find it.

What they don’t realize is you don’t have to change to come to Jesus. You can’t change without Jesus so why would he make you change in order to come into relationship with him. Come as you are at that very moment. It is Christ that does the changing!

2. Laziness

Some of us desire to have a better relationship with God and be more spiritually mature but we just can’t find the time. Maybe we are just too tired, or just can get out of the T.V or off social media.

Hebrews 6:12

That you be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

The truth of the matter is that you are as close to God as you want to be. If you want to do something about your spiritual maturity then you are going to have to get up and do it. The bible says that he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him (Hebrews 11:6).

3. Ignorance

Some people just don’t realize that there is more than what they are experiencing, more than what they currently know.

Hosea 4:6

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.

That is why it is imperative that we get in the word for ourselves so that we have our own revelation and understanding of the word of God.

4. Under a dead ministry

There are many people that are sitting up under a ministry that is too busy coming up with catchy one liners that there is actually no growth and maturing of the body of Christ.

1 Corinthians 1:17

For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

Many churches and preachers lack the transforming power of the cross because they are operating in their own wisdom and eloquence of speech.  This strips the cross of its power and the ability to change lives.

This last one is one is one that my sister brought up during bible study.

4. Faith

People are so overwhelmed by what they see and hear happening around them that they are losing their faith in what they once believed.

Romans 1:17

The just shall live by faith

We cannot live our lives swayed by the things that we see, feel, and hear that are happening around us. We base what we feel, think, see, and hear on the word of God and must bring our feelings and senses under subjection of the word.

What does God say about spiritual maturity?

Hebrew 5:13 – 14

For everyone that useth milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

You are a babe (spiritually immature) when you are unskillful in the word. If you are unskillful in the word it is probably because of two things. Not knowing what the word says and/or not believing what the word says. It then goes on to say that those who are mature is because they exercised their senses to discern both good and evil.

Is this talking about natural senses? No, using your nose to smell cannot discern between good and evil. This is talking about your spiritual senses which can only be exercised first by knowledge of the truth.

1 Corinthians 3:2

I have fed you with milk and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men.

This scripture is pretty powerful. He is saying that I have been speaking to you as babes, because you cannot bear things that involve the comprehension needed from spiritual maturity. Then he goes on to say you are ruled by your flesh, you act like those who do not even know Christ, therefore you are spiritually immature. Wow! Those who are still being carnal (walking after the flesh) are still spiritually immature. They have not not allowed God to transform them by his word and Holy Spirit.

It all points back to the word of God

Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

The only way to be transformed into who our Father has called us to be is to transform our minds. The way we do that is by getting in our words and finding out what God has said about us. Once we do that he will begin to transform us from the inside out.

So what are you waiting for? What is holding you back from drawing closer to God today? Let us let go of the excuses and draw nearer to him as we begin to spiritually mature and walk in all he has called us to be.

Be blessed family
